Malda is West Bengal's biggest mango district, and its old orchards line the Mahananda river. Himsagar ripens here in late May and June: small, fibreless and so sweet that Kolkata families wait for it all year. We are scouting land near English Bazar now and will lease a plot only after soil and water tests, once enough Kolkata families reserve.

Himsagar is a Bengal variety through and through: it wants deep alluvial soil, a humid summer and plenty of monsoon rain. Malda has all three, and the Malda Khirsapati (Himsagar) GI protects its name.
