Climate atlas · 12 crops × 7 farms

Every crop grows where its climate belongs.

We score every crop against every farm's long-run climate: winter lows, summer highs, rain, chill hours, soil pH, altitude and humidity. Tap any square to see why a crop thrives in one place and struggles in another.

85+Our rule: we only plant a crop on a farm where it scores 85 or more. No mangoes in the desert, no apples on the plains.
Climate fit score (0–100) of each crop at each farm. A dot marks the farm where the crop is grown.

Seven climates

From the Thar's edge to Himalayan ridges.

India spans desert, coast, plateau and mountain. Instead of forcing every crop onto one plot, each crop gets the region it evolved for.

24Poor fit
Apple at JaipurSemi-arid eastern plain (Rajasthan zone IIIa) · 630 mm rain · 8°C to 41°C

Apple scores 24/100 at Jaipur: poor fit. We only plant where a crop scores 85 or more.

  • Summers are too hot: highs of about 41°C, above the 30°C Apple tolerates.
  • Not enough winter cold: about 150 chill hours, and Apple needs 1,000+ to flower evenly.
  • The soil is too alkaline (pH 8.1); Apple does best at pH 5.5–7 and struggles to take up iron and zinc above that.
  • Too low: 430 m, and Apple wants 1,500 m or more for cool nights.
  • Winter lows100
    8°C coldest-month low; needs ≥ -25°C
  • Summer highs0
    41°C hottest-month high; tolerates ≤ 30°C
  • Rainfall93
630 mm/yr; comfortable 800–1,600 mm (drip can top up)
  • Winter chill6
    150 chill hours; needs 1000+
  • Soil pH34
    pH 8.1; suits 5.5–7
  • Altitude14
    430 m; suits 1,500–2,800 m
  • Humidity100

Methodology

How the score works.

It's a planning tool we built to choose farms honestly, and we show every number behind it. It is not a promise about any season's harvest.

The data

Farm climates are long-run regional normals from IMD (India Meteorological Department) and state agro-climatic zoning, rounded. Crop requirements come from ICAR institutes and state agricultural universities' published recommendations.

The maths

Each of seven factors scores 0–100 against the crop's comfortable range. The total blends the weighted average (55%) with the single worst factor (45%), so one deal-breaker, like too little winter chill, sinks the score however good the rest is.

Weights: chill 1.4 · winter lows 1.2 · summer highs 1.2 · soil pH 1.0 · altitude 1.0 · rainfall 0.8 · humidity 0.6. Rain shortfalls count half when drip can make them up.

What it isn't

A heuristic, not a guarantee. It can't see a hailstorm, a pest year or one field's drainage. That's why every farm still gets soil and water tests, and why yields are always shown as reference, planning and conservative ranges.
